When I first started gathering tractors, I was so excited to come upon a pair of Fordsons on steel. While some of the above experiences may sound a bit negative, to be honest the stories I have had to add to a session around the coffee table have never stopped being a source of enjoyment and occasionally a good laugh on myself! Now. But how does one go about determining what make and model the tractor is so you can purchase the items you need? The first logical step would be to ask a friend or a neighbor who is knowledgeable about tractors. A rotary mower is a good example. For sources of wheel weights, check with your local scrap yard. Draining the gas from the tank and carburetor is extremely important since gasoline tends to convert itself to a varnish while it sits. After the welding was complete, my first lesson involved finding the correct bolts for reassembly. Crank engine over a few times and replace spark plugs. Your best guide to proper inflation is the operator's manual or instruction book that covers your tractor. Always attach the backhoe transport chains or other locking devices before transporting. Check storage battery weekly. It increased the farm productivity and, in general, made life easier because more work could be done with this 'mechanical beast'. Take a small pass with the plow taking a shallow bite at first and observe how the tractor responds to the load. Always fasten the top link last. The latches on the ball hitch, if that is used, should be free of dirt and debris and should engage the ball securely without binding. Then the tire was filled from half to three-quarters full, depending on the desired weight to add, then topped off to the standard pressure rating with air. Therefore in simplified terms, a horsepower is 33,000 foot pounds of work done in one minute. If one is not available, clean with a wire brush. This is done by grounding the 3rd brush and field coil. The small dirt particles are trapped on the oil soaked "shavings" as the air moves upward through the outer cannister. Remove all the plug wires from the plugs to keep the engine from starting since you are testing for spark, not trying to start it. It's a common problem for old machines especially when the weather starts to dip below 40 and the tractor isn't fired up as often. As an example, one manual suggests that if you hold the piston rod vertically and center the piston it should balance. Remove the head, remove the ridge, and remove the rod bearing caps. If you try to just get by with problems like those described above ("Well . Stems and Guides - Check valve stems for wear. In the Three-brush Generators article, we discussed the three-brush charging systems, predominantly used on tractors in the 40s and early 50s. Scavenger deposits appear as crusty yellowish or whitish buildups on the electrode surface. It is understandable, though, if one doesn't feel comfortable pulling this rotating heart from engine. That is where multiviscosity oil, such as 10w-30, comes in. Changing the stuff isn't that big a deal. Place the battery off of the floor, preferably on a wooden bench or shelf. Place the block on a hydraulic press and line it and the ram up with the sleeve. Ok, release the purist. Each type of cast iron requires a different method for welding.
